For 50 years, Tarion has helped protect Ontario new home buyers by ensuring they receive the warranty coverage they are entitled to. Its goal is to give home buyers peace of mind and confidence that their new homes are built properly.
Tarion supports homeowners through education, customer service, dispute resolution, and warranty protection. All new homes in Ontario are covered by a builder warranty, and Tarion helps ensure builders meet their warranty obligations.
Tarion's key responsibilities include:
- Protecting homeowners when builders do not fulfill warranty obligations.
- Educating new home buyers about their warranty rights and responsibilities.
- Providing the MyHome online portal to manage warranties and report defects.
- Resolving disputes related to warranty coverage, repairs, or customer service.
- Assessing warranty claims through inspections or other investigations.
- Arranging repairs or compensation when builders fail to address valid claims.
- Managing the warranty guarantee fund that pays compensation for eligible claims.
Since February 1, 2021, builder licensing and regulation in Ontario have been handled by the Home Construction Regulatory Authority (HCRA), while Tarion continues to administer the new home warranty program. For more information, visit HCRA Ontario
